Episodes 5 and 6 of The Magic of Deben Market, tonight at 7pm UK time. Last night I watched the actor, John Hales, give a mesmerising performance as Moony Moore. When BookStreamz asked for The Magic of Deben Market, I was thrilled and overjoyed (who wouldn’t be?), but also a little apprehensive. After all, much of the story revolves around an old fisherman, Moony, who has a heavily localised accent - an accent I am familiar with. My concern was that the actor would miss the subtlety of the accent by a country mile. But I needed have fretted, John is perfect. Not only has he nailed Moony’s voice, but his whole delivery is spot on; the pauses in between sentences, moments of silence as he wistfully recalled moments of regret or spins a yarn that may or may not be true. And all with a twinkle in his eye. Stunning work. This is not to overlook everyone’s else’s contribution, because they were all great. But John Hales is brilliant. Thank you, John
